Visit American Cave Museum and Hidden River Cave for an ecological lesson for all. The town of Horse Cave literally grew around the Hidden River Cave. Hidden River Cave opened for commercial tours in 1916, but over the next thirty years, the town's growth, overcrowding and poor sanitation practices took their toll. The town chose to dump trash in the cave and the pollution became so bad that it was closed. Over time it only grew worse as the pollution festered. It was so bad, the jewelry store across the street would have to close by midday. The cave's restoration in 1993 was one of the most remarkable environmental success stories in America.
Now the cave smells clean. Recycled milk containers keep tourists from tumbling into the river and a major focus of the museum is ecological safe practices to protect our cave systems today. Museum exhibits also include information on Prehistoric Cave Explorers, Cave Lighting, Cave Wars and much more.
